Connecting Sound and Society: Welcome to Sociophon Lab!
The Sociophon Lab provides a collaborative space for doctoral students interested in exploring the intersection of sociolinguistics and phonetics. Our focus lies in examining how social factors such as gender, ethnicity, social class, and identity are reflected in and shape speech variation and phonetic patterns. We work exclusively with quantitative methods, with a strong emphasis on statistical analysis using R.
In our lab meetings, we will :
- Discuss recent literature in sociophonetics and phonetic variation.
- Present and receive feedback on ongoing research projects.
- Conduct hands-on workshops on acoustic analysis, data visualization, and statistical modeling in R.
- Explore methodological issues in quantitative sociophonetic research, including experimental design, data processing, and statistical interpretation.
