Introduction

Major of Visual Communication Design

The Major in Visual Communication Design at Cheongju University College of Arts was first established in 1997 as the Department of Applied Arts, the first of its kind to be established in the provinces. After producing its first graduates in 1982, the Major in Visual Communication Design has contributed to the development of the domestic design industry by producing various experts in academia and practical fields.

From our cutting-edge educational environment in the new School of Arts and Design building, which was newly built in 2008, we have been devoted to cultivating professional visual designers for a knowledge-based society through efficient lectures, hands-on training, and active exchanges between junior and senior students. Further, for the purpose of leading a new paradigm in the changing times, the Major in Visual Communication Design provides training to obtain new design skills suitable for various forms of media in the visual design field such as print, advertising, and new media. Additionally, along with a variety of design methodologies related to developing creative ideas, design management, and design thinking, this major offers various curricula that is practice-oriented to cultivate expressive ability for effectively delivering information.

Major of Craft & Design

The Major in Crafts is a combination of diversity, expertise, creativity and artistry of the genres from the fields of popular and industrial design, to the field of personal and artistic artist activities, making this a major with a broad selection of career choices and activities after graduation.

In the basic curriculum of this major, the students are given the opportunities to explore the major and learn about the relevant knowledge, and in the major intensive course, students are taught to be able to develop creativity and design abilities. In particular, operating an educational curriculum that cultivates operational skills in the formative school years that includes Photoshop, Illustrator, CAD, 3D programs and other computer graphics, places a focus on the skills that can enhance one’s capabilities for finding employment after graduating.

Major of Art & Fashion Design

The Major in Art & Fashion develops creative abilities of expression and communicating with society by finding one’s own unique method through the consilience of genres, and focuses on training experts in the visual arts field and culture and arts industry convergence field (Artists, artist-type designers, art and fashion industry convergence coordinators, etc.) to promptly adapt to changing times.

In the fourth industrial revolution that is already upon us, industries that are different from one another are actively converging based on ICT, and we are in the era of consilience where the breadth and speed of change is on a large scale and quite complex. In the era of the fourth industrial revolution caused by rapid developments in artificial intelligence, there is a definite demand for that which people have but AI is yet to acquire, such as human creativity, character and the development of communicative ability. Creativity can only be developed through arts education, and character and communicative ability is only be fostered through humanities, history and collaborative education. The Major in Art & Fashion is based on such recognition and through a culture and arts startup coworking space, and with the integrated curriculum such as creative arts education, fashion, and ICT education, it will cultivate consilient creative talent in the visual arts field and culture and arts industry convergence field (Artists, artist-typedesigners, art and fashion industry convergence coordinators, etc.).

Major of Digital Media Design

The Major in Information Interaction Design is an advanced study that integrates newly introduced technology and art through methodologies of information design and service design, for the user environments of various smart devices and the new digital environments of virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality.

The education course of the major is a mutual combination of three areas: information, interaction and design. Based on people-centered design principles, the students develop creative thinking, learn about advanced digital technology, and acquire knowledge in the related fields of human psychology and behavior. Further, they learn through classes that are mostly project based where students conduct the relevant research and investigation to propose various solutions to problems that arise in our digital lives. The results of the projects would be diverse in the form of experimental projects of virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality based on the web, mobile, software, the Internet of Things and other user environments, and advanced video technology.

There is fresh demand by companies related to the technology design both in Korea and abroad for designers that are compatible to the changing digital environment to analyze the various problems arising in the digital environment, resolve them, and offer a smooth and pleasant interaction between people and products, which should translate into very good prospects in finding employment.

Major of Industrial Design

The 21st century is a knowledge-based information age that demands convergent design education that crosses the boundaries of complex, multi-disciplinary domains. Now, the Major in Industrial Design teaches students to acquire interdisciplinary knowledge in order to develop professionals with international acumen. Based on harmonious thinking and expressions of reason and emotion, we explore new design language and raise individual creativity and competence to the stage of innovation and have students get involved in design education.

Major of Cartoon & Animation

The Major in Cartoon and Animation was established with the goal of training accomplished artists with creativity in the cartoon, animation, game and film industry based on the long tradition of the College of Arts, and is equipped with advanced educational facilities as a specialized major at Cheongju University. Education in this major includes the operation of a systematic curriculum from the basic courses to intensive ones. Furthermore, this major offers students the benefit of selecting from a diverse and broad range of courses thanks to the faculty that have abundant practical experience in the field.

In addition, the Major in Cartoon and Animation provides extra-curricular opportunities including club activities involving Illustrators, 3D animation, and films, and other educational activities and interaction between junior and senior students, special lectures by experts and open classes which all offer opportunities for students to enhance their learning capacity and broaden their network.
