Introducing the Department of Advertising and Public Relations at Cheongju National University.

The CheongDae Times probationary reporter Shinhui Park.

The Department of Advertising and Public Relations at Cheongju University is a representative practical academic field in the social sciences. It focuses on fostering creative talents with balanced problem-solving skills in advertising, public relations, and various related fields. It is a field where students can learn persuasive communication and content, such as public relations and advertising, in a convergent manner.

Professor Kim Chul-ho, the head of the Department of Advertising and Public Relations, said, “The department’s major events such as advertising festivals, advertising camps, and joint festivals, which are held as part of industry-academic cooperation with major corporations and public institutions, as well as club activities in various fields, help provide practical experience in applying the core theories and knowledge learned in class to practice, and further have a positive effect on students’ voluntary goal setting and motivation to achieve them, leading to excellent award-winning performance in various national competitions.”

The Advertising and Public Relations Department is made up of five clubs in total: one central club and four departmental clubs. The planning clubs include the central club Pineapple, Dream, Hogwarts, and, as for the video club, there is Casanova. AD: Live is a club newly established in 25 years that is the only one in the department where you can learn advertising planning and video production at the same time.

As a student in the Department of Advertising and Public Relations, you will participate in on-campus and external competitions on various topics. At this time, club activities are a good opportunity to lay the foundation for planning and video, so many advertising and public relations students are actively participating in club activities.

In this way, club activities and participation in competitions are considered important processes in the Department of Advertising and Public Relations. However, many students have difficulty with this. To make your life in the Advertising and Public Relations Department more enjoyable and meaningful, we interviewed Pineapple Vice President Yun-seo Kwon, Class of 23.

Pineapple is a central club that has been carrying out various activities related to advertising planning since 1995, under the philosophy that good people make good advertisements. We provide various experiences centered on advertising planning to help club members develop their capabilities in the fields of advertising and marketing.

Currently, Pineapple handles internal mentoring and menteeing within the club every semester through ‘Pine PT’. For the first semester of 25 years, we invited ‘Korea Insurance News’, a leading insurance journal in Korea, as a client and are conducting ‘Fine PT’ with the theme of ‘Ideas for increasing the MZ generation’s interest in insurance’.

Kwon Yun-seo said, “The 15th is the Fine PT event, and the club members will present the plan they prepared themselves in front of the actual people involved. Since Fine PT is held before the Advertising Festival, which is the first academic festival held within the Department of Advertising and Public Relations, You can gain experience one step ahead of your peers who are first exposed to planning through an academic festival, and you can immediately ask questions and learn about things you don't know through the presence of mentors.” She also expressed her anticipation for Fine PT, saying, “I think it will be an opportunity to become close with not only my peers but also my seniors during the awkward new semester when students from different grades are mixed to form teams.”

Next, when asked about her tips for successfully participating in contests and club activities, she answered, first, to speak actively during meetings; second, when the meeting is not going well, put the laptop down rather than looking at it and talk to team members; and third, hold meetings in the morning or during the day rather than at night.

Regarding the reason, she said, “Everyone has different tendencies, but I think that actively speaking up and not hiding your thoughts during meetings helps create good results. Also, when my mind is tangled and I can't figure something out, I close the computer for a moment and share my thoughts with my team members. This can help me discover the core of the part I couldn't figure out. Lastly, it's more efficient to meet during the day rather than at night or in the early morning hours to hold meetings."

“I think that the more you experience planning and video production, the more you will get a feel for it, and your skills will improve. Therefore, rather than focusing only on famous and large-scale contests during the lower grades, it is better to participate in contests on various topics, prioritizing quantity over quality.” For this reason, she recommended participating in all the academic festivals held in the department.

In particular, she thinks that participating in academic festivals held by the department is not only for the sake of gaining experience, but also as preparation for external competitions. She explained, “External competitions require you to recruit team members and form a team yourself, so you get to experience various seniors, juniors, and peers you meet through academic festival, and based on that experience, you get the chance to find people who are a good fit for you and form a team.”

When I asked about her final words, she offered this advice, “In our department, the paths that can be taken after graduation are relatively diverse and wide. While attending school, I think it would be good to try out various activities such as competitions, supporter activities, consumer analysis activities, and design studies to find out what you like and are good at, and to design a specific career path after graduation.”

The various activities in the Department of Advertising and Public Relations are more than just simple experiences; they are a process of exploring career paths and discovering one's aptitude, so it is important to directly participate in various activities. I hope that the tips I gained from this interview will help you make your life in the Advertising and Public Relations Department more meaningful and enjoyable.
